SOMETIMES ONE PIC IS ENOUGH

FLOWER WORKSHOP AT H&M HOME

H&M home flower workshop photo by Kreetta Järvenpää

In the times of the pictorial glut it's even more important to understand the power of one photo.

In July I had a chance to teach a flower workshop at H&M Home in Iso Omena for 2 wonderful groups of lucky members of H&M Club. This pic I styled and photographed for H&M for marketing these workshops. I also used it in my own Instagram feed and offered a chance to win 2 places in these workshops for my followers. I just love the idea of one photo but of course I had to take few and finally I used two pics in my feed. One when announcing the competition and one as a reminder pic.  ( and when I'm telling in IG about this post I will use the third one)

Social media demands often more than one photo but there is a difference between enough and overload. Before I began my Instagram feed January 2014 I was very convinced that I don't need or actually the world doesn't need more of my pics but I was wrong. From Instagram I found very lovely community of people who I'm following now and we are having great conversations and plenty of useful tips have been shared and mindful thoughts too. I've got so many thankful comments and DM:s about my flower photography that it's been almost overwhelming.

Yes, my feed is full of flowers and (at the moment) Mama Haruki's kittens too. There are posts of food too but mostly flowers. I have over 14 000 followers and I'm very grateful of that and always happy to read all the comments. Maybe now I can call myself social media influencer. I've made few Instagram takeovers and I have to say I've enjoyed a lot making them. Love to tell this to you because I'm back at work and it's time to create something new and beautiful, don't you think? Something what we haven't seen before.

One more thing. I was smiling today when I saw the cover of Vogue. There were huge flower headpiece and Beyonce. I had an art exhibition I See Color in January where I had huge floral headpieces. I taught flower crown workshop at Johanna Gullichsen shop in Helsinki in May and designed flower crowns for Supershe Island summer 2018 retreatsFlower crowns are made by Bukettmakaren. I guess we are not so far from each other anymore. The world and us.

STILL LIFE SERIES 4

FOREST WALK PLANTS AND FLOWERS

still life flowers photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

This day has been rainy and dark. I've been a bit sick even though it's my first day of summer vacation and then saddest news from Nice. What ever we people do we should start to care more about - everything.

We decided to take a short peaceful walk in a forest because the whole day inside the house with the crazy news doesn't make you feel better. On the way I picked few plants and flowers because I felt I needed to. Nature is beautiful in every sense, actually I kind of like the rain if I just have proper clothing and that means - my rubber boots.

This still life is about all the sadness of killing that happens in the world every day. For us it is shown expecially on the days like this. This day stays in my blog as a sign of human nature. I hope we can all work for more peaceful world.

Enjoy your weekend!

STILL LIFE SERIES 3

GARDEN FLOWERS IN JULY

Flower arrangement photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com This year summer has surprised us. It begun in May and flowers have been blooming quite early and rapidly. In spring I decided to try grow anemones, because they are one of my favorites. I did it as I could and I am so happy I have few blooming at the moment. White, blue and fuchia.

I gathered flowers from our garden this evening. I also borrowed few from our upstairs neighbour's flower bed. I just wish summer would stay longer with us and these flowers too. The vase is from my mom's home and I remember it from my childhood. I remember huge garden with strawberries, different kind of berries like red currant, apple and plum trees with lines of carrots, peas and potatoes. Lots of flowers. I remember I said that I never will have a garden because it is so huge work! We use to help our mom with garden - she paid us a little money for it. But never say never - now I have a garden and I love it.

I planted a lot of anemones in spring and finally I have one blooming and you can find it from this arrangement. So happy about it. This is second post of my summer still life series. I will make flower arrangements from the flowers and plants in our garden.

STILL LIFE SERIES 1

GARDEN FLOWERS IN MAY

garden flowers photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

Flowers are in my heart more deeply.

I love all the things they are and what they give to us. Yesterday when I walked in our garden and smelled the scent of lilacs I felt I need to photograph all these beauties before they are gone. This is how I decided to make my summer series: still life series.

Have a lovely beginning of the week!

SPRING FLOWERS

COLORING YOUR WEEKEND

spring flowers photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

How are you? I have been away from here for a one month. I have had a bit challenging winter and spring so all the energy levels have been a bit low. But luckily now we are living very wishful time of the year. Everything is starting to grow, small little green signs everywhere. Birds are singing beautifully - expecially in the morning. The light is finally back with us. Oh, I've missed it. You have more time to make things in the evenings.

One thing is for sure - garden is waiting for its gardener :) This weekend I'm going to soak my anemone bulps and put them into soil and wish fingers crossed that they grow and we can enjoy beauty of them. Have you ever grown anemones? I've understood that they aren't so easy to grow and they don't survive through winter expecially here in the north where I live. You have to bring them in after summer.

Like garden our home needs to be taken care of. When the first sunny days come in spring you see how dusty and dirty windows you have. The light reveals so many things at your home that something have to be done. So this weekend we must clean the house. I don't like so much cleaning so I need extra boost to begin it. Good music is the answer, I think. A good thing is that after you have made all the things you have to, you can enjoy of clean home and sun. Maybe even have a good cup of coffee in the chilly garden (not to be bothered about that) and listen to beautiful bird song.

Have a beautiful weekend my friend!

Nothing is perfect. I think. And if things were perfect, nothing interesting would happen.

As a creative it is awful to admit that without special reason some days are just more difficult than others. You know...that...block. And how to overcome it?

BRAIN FOOD

I need proper food. I have missed my favorite nuts: almond and walnut. Maybe that's why I haven't been feeling well. But today we went to get our precious nuts from - our best local grocery shop ever - Liike51. It is the superb grocery shop of local, organic and French delicacy.

Well, when we went there I found the most beautiful pomegranate, pears and mango. I had to photograph them because you have to see them too! So this picture is called Brain food. Actually in Liike51 one customer saw our shoppings and she said "Hey that is brain food!" She was right :)

FLOWER POWER - EASY PHOTOGRAPHING WITH iPHONE

dried flowers photo by Kreetta Järvenpää by iPhone www.gretchengretchen.com

I've noticed that I have started to photograph even more with my iPhone. It's easier and faster and you get your photos in no time to Instagram. I've been in Instagram now for a one year and I have no regrets. I use to think that there are way too many photographs in the world and that is a great excuse to avoid IG. But...well no. It's a place with people. It's a place of community.

fruits and flowers photo by Kreetta Järvenpää by iPhone www.gretchengretchen.com
I use VSCOcam to photograph my pics. I've just use to it, so I don't use camera's own app to do it. I don't know which one is better but I've my habits and quite happy with them. You know the size of the photograph taken with phone is huge. You can get almost A4 sized pic with 300dpi so nothing stop you making a nice photograph print from your phone photos. I think that is amazing. Technology is here to stay and it is speeding forward and I just don't know where we are after next ten years.

I surely believe that if you want to have a job and live good life, you can't step back and avoid all the technology. You have to go along but you can choose your way. Appearance in internet and social media can't beat the true value of friendship and family so there are moments that you just have to forget the whole world around you and concentrate to your real life. It's sometimes hard because it is so easy to just push buttons on your phone and make a digital foodprints one after another.

What do you think?

Here's 3 IG accounts I love to follow:

Feeling Easter

Happy Easter! Spring is giving it's best at the moment. We have light, birds are singing, little by little the green is growing and we are starting to get warm days with bright sunlight. Hooray the winter is gone! I have been working the whole autumn and winter with my project "frayed and crackled" in ceramics. I'm so happy to say that finally I've got something to show to you. But before that I wish you enjoy my Easter feeling photos! Yes, they are dark. I followed the idea of traditional still life painting. I made them two weeks ago when I was working with air plants. Those photos you can find here.

What kind of Easter you are going to have? I'm off to Paris with my husband! It's my birthday present...I've waited this so much. It's good to get older I guess, haha...and enjoy the spring in the beautiful city.

Pineapple, Cabbage, Protea and Tillandsias

pineapple photo by Kreetta Järvenpää blog: www.gretchengretchen.com

Have you ever had an idea or thing in your head and you just can't get rid of it? Inspiration that won't leave you before you have done something about it?

Lately I have had one fruit in my mind. That fruit is pineapple. So today I had to go and buy one and of course photograph it. Today not tomorrow. Another haunting thing in my mind has been a savoy cabbage in our refrigerator. It has so beautiful texture. Very photogenic...so I had to photograph it also.

Protea photo by Kreetta Järvenpää blog: www.gretchengretchen.com

And what about this exotic flower - Protea. I have it because of photoshooting at work. It's flower is like pineapple's surface texture. It is so weird but so pretty. It goes well with pineapple and cabbage, doesn't it?

Finally I get to plants that I love. I got these air plants this Friday thanks for Till Herba Caeli. Now they are here with us in our home. I used them as a prop in few pics I made at work and now I just had to photograph them with pineapple. Of course. They go well together don't they? Friends, haha.

pineapple and tillandsias photo by Kreetta Järvenpää blog: www.gretchengretchen.com

Inspiration and ideas. So many in your mind but only few comes out as artistic work and even fewer you like the result. I have thought many times how would I photograph pineapple. After long time thinking it came naturally. The light was great this evening so it was easy to just make a setup in our living room and use natural light. I wanted to make a little bit like those old still life paintings from the past. But didn't make the whole composition with many kind of fruits, veggies etc - instead - I made very simple still life compositions.

The most important thing is to forget criticism and enjoy making things. They don't have to be perfect. Process starts from somewhere and ends somewhere and you can always start a new one. Only thing what really has happened is you've learned something. That's not a bad thing either, haha.
