MY STORY - HOW I FOUND COLORS AND FLOWERS

STILL LEARNING ABOUT  COLORS IN ANNIE SLOAN´S WORKSHOP AT MÅLA & MORE

Today I write about my journey with colors. I also show you pics from the workshop by wonderful artist Annie Sloan in Helsinki at Måla&More. She is the lady behind the Chalk Paint® since 1990. Magical matt Chalk Paint® with such a wonderful color chart. Think about that. Why I found her only in 2014? Because that was the year I began as a freelance photographer and artist after working 8 years in a big publishing house. I was looking for a good matt paint for my photography props to get right kind of feeling to my photographs. This post is not sponsored.

Over last four years I've been photographing food and flowers. Lots of lots of flowers lately :) How I got here, how I found colors and flowers. Let's go back to the year 2015. Then in some photo shootings I began to make styling by adding flowers to table set. That time is a very important moment in my story with flowers. I was brave enough to take a step and believe that I can work with colors and flowers so well that I can choose all the props and backgrounds for photo shootings.

Then time machine takes us to the year 2011 when I was working in publishing house as a photographer. Oh how I was unsure about all those things. I let art director or stylist to make the styling. But somewhere deep inside I was already eager to learn using colors and finally I opened a door when I began acrylic painting in 2012. Thanks to my lovely and inspiring teacher Alina Sinivaara I could dive into the world of colors without worrying perspective or any other details. I could just use my big moves and I painted abstract. The whole thing was - and still is - about the colors and textures. I did not need any reality when panting because for that I could use my camera. I could just enjoy and mix the colors.

Professionally I began to style with flowers since 2015 when we made food photography for customers with talented cook Meri-Tuuli Väntsi.  Dried flowers I used in 2016 when we made our first cooking book Pataruokaa (A Book of Stews) together. I collected different kind of plants and flowers from the nature and used them as dried especially in our table settings. I think during that time we both - Meri-Tuuli and I grew with our talent to create beautiful food photography. We created a world of winter, woolly socks, gathering with friends and heartwarming stews. It had to and it was perfect. We really took the time to take pics to next level and I guess we made pretty nice job there ;) a bit raw, rustic, eclectic with style.

The year when we made the book was such a roller coaster for me. The year began with sudden death of my mom. I was devastated. First 2 weeks after her death I just painted. But something good grow from her death, I can say now after three years.

Throwing myself to new things didn't scare me after her death. My first real flower work was funeral flowers for her. I began to take my tiny steps towards flowers. I have photographed them before in my weird still lifes that you will never see - with all kinds of stuff. But now it was time to take bigger step and my next big goal was to learn to make a beautiful flower arrangement for my floral art photography of course. But how could I do that?

Our paths are different. There are people who believe that they can do it and they do it but there are also people like me who spends tons of time to different kind of things and also use time to think why I can't or couldn't do it. Sounds familiar? It's the worst kind of thinking.

On my path I have collected different kind of skills and things. Even though I have been unsure I have been also curious and a bit brave too. Like having this blog for example. Writing in English with imperfect English :) So 2016 I decided to arrange a flower workshop at our workspace with floral designer because I wanted to learn floral design. She would teach flowers and I flower photography. In Autumn 2016 the very first flower workshop began and they are still going strong but things have changed. At the moment I'm the teacher of both - flower arrangement and photography. For me the most intriguing challenge is to combine colors. Surprise! Still learning it because it's not only the colors, it's also textures, shapes, movement, contrast etc. But at the moment I'm trying to share my so far knowledge about designing with flowers and colors.

different techniques

I am very eager to learn more and I have been visiting different floral designers like amazing Susanne from The Blue Carrot as 1:1 student and then I took part in The Golden Age flower workshop by talented Emily from Fleuropean and Susanne from The Blue Carrot. I met also a lot of amazing people. I hope during this year I can meet more talented floral designers and other artists.

complimentary colors
Now (finally) we come to the workshop by Annie Sloan. It was in September 2018 and I was super happy that I could meet this interesting and talented lady. Because the most important thing when you try to learn something is to have eyes open and ears too for other talented people methods and point of views. The other artist doesn't have to do the same as you do - colors are quite universal I think. Teaching yourself to use and combine colors is a challenging task and it might take a bit time but it's so worth it! I use to be afraid of colors, even colorful clothing was hard to choose because I felt much easier to choose black, grey or white ;) not anymore.

Annie is having her moment with new bookazine The Colourist

I know there is a bit of talent ;)  experience and curiosity but there is also a huge amount of different kind of the work behind all of this. No-one can give you a talent or skill you just have to work for it. As we all know we creative people have our own secret places, books, shops, museums, music that we might not share with others so eagerly. But I will share now two important things I learnt at Annie Sloan's workshop.

1. You make mistakes with colors but hey who doesn't. Try again. (very simple but so easy to just use your time to avoid it and nothing interesting happens)

2. Complimentary colors. No black. No pure white. If you have two complimentary colors, mix them and get a darker color. Use these colors when you make your white.  All fits nicely together. If you want to redesign your bedroom for example you can paint all things with her Chalk Paint ® yes, even curtains. No more trying to find a perfect match, it's already there.

And if you want to find a creative secret then you have to read the bookazine by Annie that she is holding in her hands. It's a place and totally worth to visit! I hope I will. Maybe even this year, but you never know.

Congrats if you are still reading my post about colors and flowers. Like here in my flower arrangement the nature has so many different flowers and colors. Same flower can be different color based on the soil where it has grown or time of the season, or how old it is etc. so you just have to learn to accept the grace of organic and ever changing nature. It's your palette, enjoy!

I want to thank you Annie and Christel for wonderful workshop!

TOP 10 OF THE YEAR 2018

My year 2018 TOP 10 EXHIBITIONS, FLOWER WORKS AND INTERVIEWS

It's time for recap of the year 2018. It has been full of hard work and wonderful assignments - both commissioned and personal work. I am more than happy how the year treated me. I've been busy and I will take a short pause in January and after that I will be ready for the year 2019.  As I said it's been a busy year and it has been full of emotions especially with my cat family. Haruki got 4 kittens in June 14th and it was super lovely to follow kittens growing and finally one of the kittens stayed with us - Tove darling. Now Haruki has a cat friend and I'm very happy about that too. In the beginning it was quite difficult but now they really are friends.

But let's get back to my top 10 of the year 2018. It wasn't easy to choose from all the assignments I had. It was also hard to put them in order and order is not necessarily considered very seriously - they are all works I loved to do. There are also things I can't tell or show you yet but I will during this year. I want to thank you each and everyone for co-working with me. You made my day and hopefully we do some unique things this year too!

SOMETIMES ONE PIC IS ENOUGH

FLOWER WORKSHOP AT H&M HOME

H&M home flower workshop photo by Kreetta Järvenpää

In the times of the pictorial glut it's even more important to understand the power of one photo.

In July I had a chance to teach a flower workshop at H&M Home in Iso Omena for 2 wonderful groups of lucky members of H&M Club. This pic I styled and photographed for H&M for marketing these workshops. I also used it in my own Instagram feed and offered a chance to win 2 places in these workshops for my followers. I just love the idea of one photo but of course I had to take few and finally I used two pics in my feed. One when announcing the competition and one as a reminder pic.  ( and when I'm telling in IG about this post I will use the third one)

Social media demands often more than one photo but there is a difference between enough and overload. Before I began my Instagram feed January 2014 I was very convinced that I don't need or actually the world doesn't need more of my pics but I was wrong. From Instagram I found very lovely community of people who I'm following now and we are having great conversations and plenty of useful tips have been shared and mindful thoughts too. I've got so many thankful comments and DM:s about my flower photography that it's been almost overwhelming.

Yes, my feed is full of flowers and (at the moment) Mama Haruki's kittens too. There are posts of food too but mostly flowers. I have over 14 000 followers and I'm very grateful of that and always happy to read all the comments. Maybe now I can call myself social media influencer. I've made few Instagram takeovers and I have to say I've enjoyed a lot making them. Love to tell this to you because I'm back at work and it's time to create something new and beautiful, don't you think? Something what we haven't seen before.

One more thing. I was smiling today when I saw the cover of Vogue. There were huge flower headpiece and Beyonce. I had an art exhibition I See Color in January where I had huge floral headpieces. I taught flower crown workshop at Johanna Gullichsen shop in Helsinki in May and designed flower crowns for Supershe Island summer 2018 retreatsFlower crowns are made by Bukettmakaren. I guess we are not so far from each other anymore. The world and us.

KUKKA WORKSHOP

ARTIFICIAL LIGHT - CAN YOU USE IT WHEN PHOTOGRAPHING FLOWERS?

flower workshop photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

Familiar things. Comfort zone. For me going after artificial light with flowers was a big big question mark. For me flower photography has been all about natural light. But as I live in north - Finland - we really don't have much of the light during November, December or January either and I have to photograph then too. Yesterday we had the flower workshop at our workspace in the evening so I needed to try other options than natural light. I rented led light and here you can see the results.

flower workshop photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

Not bad. But not exactly the same at all. All these things are matter of the taste for sure. Many times there are not enough natural light or you really have to think where and when to photograph. With artificial light you are not depending at all from the giant big lamp above us. But still...

flower workshop photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

For us in kukka workshop it is important that people get a pic of their work before they leave the workshop. That is because of many reasons but the one is that the arrangement might not survive in it's beauty to student's home door.

flower workshop photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

It's also important to document the arrangement that you can get back to it and see how you develope your skills. By comparing pics of the flower arrangements together - it's easy to see. You don't need any high end camera. With this light you can shoot with smart phone too...ok, it's pro photography light and too expensive in home use and some troubles always with smart phones with right exposure but you can do it!

flower workshop photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

I just love to see student's work so it's very helpful to use certain hashtags and they are much easier to find like we use #kukkaworkshop

flower workshop photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com
Beautiful textures, tones, lines, scents, colors, shapes, thickness, airiness, diagonals, contrasts and many more. When making a flower arrangement you are like an artist who just happen to paint with flowers. Sounds tempting? For me? Yeah!

Next flower workshops will be on 19-20th of November during the weekend and they are all about Christmas. We will be at Työhuone ovi 10 and we will use natural light as much it is possible.  So if you are planning to use camera take your tripod if you have one. I will make a biggest ever background for you with different shades of white. More information here in FB event.

KUKKA WORKSHOPS COMING UP IN OCTOBER

LEARNING NEW SKILLS

If ever - it's now.

After a very busy week I finally had a chance to play with these cuties. I bought them during this week and I was a bit of afraid they will be wilted before I have time to make something out of them.  I'm always a bit unsure when I begin with my flower arrangement. How about you?

flower arrangement photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

But getting started makes my creative soul sing. It's flower therapy.

flower arrangement photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

In love with details. Odd textures and forms. Colors and tones. Mixing them all together.

flower arrangement photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

Just can't remember all the names of the flowers and plants. That is a bit annoying. Don't know if it's only my problem, haha.

flower arrangement photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

Surely it takes sometime and I took pics while building the arrangement and went to computer few times to see if everything is just in the right place. Many times they weren't but now I think they are - surely could do better. I  was building the arrangement for the picture only so one side mattered.

flower arrangement photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

I think the moment when you can say this arrangement is ready - no changes anymore - is the most hardest moment of all. I know I'm only on the way because it is still very hard to say: It's ready. But you know what they say 10 000 hours practise is needed to be a professional. Well, I hope it's less though...and do I have to be a pro? Anyway it is very very relaxing to work with flowers that is for sure and when you do it only for the camera you can break a lot of rules - that is so cool. Well, that is another story.

But if you like to learn how to make a luxurious, modern and relaxed flower arrangement, you should come to our Kukka workshop at työhuone ovi 10. I have invited talented florist Hanna Piippo to teach you the most beautiful flower arrangement on 13-14th of Oct and I will teach and help you with photographing the arrangement. Teaching is in Finnish. You can find more information about the workshop in Facebook event you can find here.

Come along!

Have a lovely Sunday!

STILL LIFE SERIES 1

GARDEN FLOWERS IN MAY

garden flowers photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

Flowers are in my heart more deeply.

I love all the things they are and what they give to us. Yesterday when I walked in our garden and smelled the scent of lilacs I felt I need to photograph all these beauties before they are gone. This is how I decided to make my summer series: still life series.

Have a lovely beginning of the week!

NATURAL DYE EASTER EGGS WITH RED CABBAGE

EASY EASTER DIY - BLUE EGGS

Natural dye Easter egg photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

How are you? I hope you have had a very pleasent weekend and energy for coming week.

I've spent my day making things I haven't had time or things I've been too lazy to do before...I read a book. Made finally a bird house from recycled wood. It's very bohemian looking, I have to say ;) Played with red cabbage and eggs because during this weekend I found a very beautiful pic of blue colored eggs in Instagram @minorgoods. They had made many shades of blue but me - usually I go with the flow and want to have things ready - so mine are just same blue. Although I left two of these eggs still in colored water. I will see how they look tomorrow.

But this is the blue you get when you natural dye your white eggs with red cabbage. Isn't it amazing?

HOW TO

You need white eggs, red cabbage, water, salt and white wine vinegar.

First cook the eggs. I made 4 eggs

Then I make the color water. I used 1 litre pot and used a bit less water and filled the pot with red cabbage, 1-2 tbsp white wine vinegar and one tsp salt. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes and after that let it be for awhile like 10 minutes.

Meanwhile decorate your eggs. I used candle wax to make the pattern. I used those small birthday cake candles, they are great to draw. I also used lace. I wrapped it around the egg and sew it enough tight that the water can't get under it and one without masking.

I put the eggs in colored water (it looked strong purple) for few hours and look - they are all blue.
Take them away when you are happy with the color. Deeper color needs more time.

That's about it. You can eat the eggs even though the color is maybe reached the inside. All is natural.

What do you think? Are you making these for your Easter dinner table?
