NATURAL DYE EASTER EGGS WITH RED CABBAGE

EASY EASTER DIY - BLUE EGGS

Natural dye Easter egg photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

How are you? I hope you have had a very pleasent weekend and energy for coming week.

I've spent my day making things I haven't had time or things I've been too lazy to do before...I read a book. Made finally a bird house from recycled wood. It's very bohemian looking, I have to say ;) Played with red cabbage and eggs because during this weekend I found a very beautiful pic of blue colored eggs in Instagram @minorgoods. They had made many shades of blue but me - usually I go with the flow and want to have things ready - so mine are just same blue. Although I left two of these eggs still in colored water. I will see how they look tomorrow.

But this is the blue you get when you natural dye your white eggs with red cabbage. Isn't it amazing?

HOW TO

You need white eggs, red cabbage, water, salt and white wine vinegar.

First cook the eggs. I made 4 eggs

Then I make the color water. I used 1 litre pot and used a bit less water and filled the pot with red cabbage, 1-2 tbsp white wine vinegar and one tsp salt. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes and after that let it be for awhile like 10 minutes.

Meanwhile decorate your eggs. I used candle wax to make the pattern. I used those small birthday cake candles, they are great to draw. I also used lace. I wrapped it around the egg and sew it enough tight that the water can't get under it and one without masking.

I put the eggs in colored water (it looked strong purple) for few hours and look - they are all blue.
Take them away when you are happy with the color. Deeper color needs more time.

That's about it. You can eat the eggs even though the color is maybe reached the inside. All is natural.

What do you think? Are you making these for your Easter dinner table?

White and Blue - Danish influence - My new ceramics

Ceramic photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com
It's the season of working with ceramics again. The course is on every Monday evening. After the summer vacation it was great to start with clay again. This autumn I want to try some new colors and because I'm a great fan of Danish style I chose white and blue.I will continue with my pastel circus too but it is always great to play with new things.

Many years ago I lived in Copenhagen for a few months. That time changed my style of decorating home. I was amazed of Danish people's homes. Families kept their curtains open even in the evenings. You could take a walk and pass by so many living rooms where people were eating, drinkin, smoking happily together. In Finland we tend to close curtains in the evenings to keep our privacy...well danes definitely didn't mind the audience.

Scilla, me and spring

scilla photo by Kreetta Järvenpää www.gretchengretchen.com

Few days I've been feeling a little bit tired and feeling not so creative. It's just have been too much work and too many things in my head. I have forgotten way too many things too. I think I have to give my brains a bit vacation. How you make your mind calm and balanced? What is your secret? ..or just habit to win this ugly feeling of numb?

I tried anyway. I took my camera and finally made the effort and picked up some scillas from our yard. They have so lovely scent. I took few photos and this one - I think - is the best one.  What do you think? Would it be nice card or picture on the wall?

Monday comes always too soon. Why not to make it lovely. Food is just basic but you can make a great atmosphere with the table setting. The candle holder is vintage and Danish Design. It's made from cast iron and called "Tiny taper holder", "Spider" made by Jens Quistgaard 1955.

Maanantai tulee aina liian pian. Kattaukseni kynttilänjalka on tanskalaista muotoilua.

Oops, always forget to tell you that finally bought a camera and playing with photoshop. Yey!

Mosaiikkia ja kevään värejä - Life of Mosaic and spring colours

...says Trend Tablet

Sweet Paul Magazine Spring 2012

Yellow yellow says Trend Tablet! No it's blue blue says Sweet Paul - new Spring issue 2012. Yes, yes but I say mosaic! I took a 2 day mosaic course and oh I say -  it was slow! ...fun and interesting. After last time one week ago I wanted to find more inspiration, ideas and knowledge about work of the mosaic and I found out that the world of mosaic is so much larger than mine. It’s been here forever and it will be. It’s a tradition of all cultures.

A few things with which I fell in love when I was sailing the internet: Samarkand where I want to go someday, Claesson Koivisto Rune who's design tiles I 'd like to have to my home, Waschbear's mosaic tiles to work with, Eric Chapeau's eggshell mosaic - just amazing...Sara White's art piece Love & Loss made me think and last but not least wonderful ceramics by Elephant Ceramics caught my eye! See all the photos below and you'll be happy! Enjoy!

Siis keltainen on uusi pinkki! Kävin katsomassa Trend Tabletin samannimisen Pinterest mood boardin.

Mosaiikki on ikiaikainen koristelutapa. Tuttuja kuvioita - marokkolaiset mosaiikkikuviot lifestyle-lehtien sivuilta ja kirkkojen vaikuttavat mosaiikkityöt…vaikka nyt et niitä ihan muistaisi…en minäkään ennen tätä kurssia. Ehkä olet käynyt Gaudin Barcelonassa tai nähnyt kuvia kaupungeista ja paikoista, joita koristavat kauniit mosaiikit. Joka tapauksessa maailma on pullollaan mosaiikkia! Tätä havaintoa tehdessäni löysin myös paikan, jonne ehdottomasti haluan joskus matkata. Haluan Uzbekistaniin, Samarkandin kaupunkiin katselemaan upeita rakennuksia ja mosaiikkitöitä.  Samasta syystä Samarkand on myös listattu Unescon mailmanperintölistalle.

Mosaiikilla on monet arkisetkin kasvot.

Löysin tällä viikolla HAND/EYE Magazinen sivuilta liikuttavan installaation, jonka luoja on tekstiilitaiteilija Sara White. Hän on mielestäni tehnyt abstraktia mosaiikkia muistuttavan teoksen. Teos on osa surutyötä, jota Sara tekee menetettyään ensimmäisen lapsensa Strikerin ennenaikaisessa synnytyksessä. Työ on esillä Ice Cube Galleriassa Denverissä toukokuussa 2012.

Love & Loss by Sara White
