Tallinn Tallinn - photo story

Last weekend we made a trip to Estonia. Tallinn was bathing in the sun and we made lovely walks around the city. I found sweet earrings from market called Kalamaja päevad. Kalamaja is one neighborhood in Tallinn and I understood that once a year they have this kind of market day and get together. Earrings are made by Maris Loitmets. She is a ceramist. And if you go to Tallinn, one interesting design shop where you can find her earrings and plenty of other Estonian design is called nu nordik. The brooch is made by Kirju and those you can find at least from Tali - Estonian design shop. And of course antique shops took my time and this charming old photo is from one of them.

Be my guest and take a glance - this is Tallinn.

Osta istu syö ja nauti - Furniture pan

Sapore Dei Mobili press photo

I find shopping sometimes a little bit hard. Expecially big and expensive things like furnitures need to be thought carefully through. I prefere to buy vintage furnitures for exemple. I love the thought that old furniture has it's own story. Sometimes it feels that it takes too long time to find the right one...but after a long waiting you really are happy when you find the one. And you are sure that it will be a part of your home.

Everyday more and more furnitures are born to be bought in our world. I was happy when I found Sapore Dei Mobili. It spoke in lovely language of today's world of consuming. Not too serious...and you can eat it.

Nokkonen on ykkönen - Nettle makes my day

nettle in the sun

My wild edibles story continues with super super nettle. I've guess your first impression isn't very kind towards this little green evil in the middle of grass...but good thing is you can eat it...and it is very healthy - lot of minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium etc. and vitamins like A, C E etc. And only few things to remember. Don't use nettle which has grown next to compost or on area which is rich in nitrogen. I'm sure you can find lots of recipes and how to do from internet so do find your way to enjoy of it.

on the way

Here's mine nettle pesto ingredients:
(I don't use measures because it's easy to taste and see when it's ready)

Raw nettle, garlic, salt, black pepper, olive oil, macadamia nuts or pine nuts or sunflower seeds depends on what you have or what you like.  I choose to add also some fresh basilica that it gets more flavor. And then just make it with blender and maybe some water to bend it. Voila.
Super super supper.

to the plate

Pieni varoituksen sana hortoilijalle: älä kerää nokkosia kompostien läheltä tai lantakasojen ym. paikkojen nitraattipitoiselta maalta.

Kevään ekat villiyrtit - The first wild edibles

goutweed

Villiyrtti cooking book

Our first wild edible guest to kitchen came straight from our garden or actually next to our garden and it is goutweed. It's fine green addition to fish and egg. I know it's also gardener's nightmare but you can eat it...in Finnish you can find a book called Villiyrttikeittokirja by Sami Tallberg. It's full of great recipes and information about wild edibles. The most important thing with wild edibles is to recognize them correctly! There's great Finnish help tool in internet luontoportti.com and you can use it in 8 languages - so go for it! I also found few wild edibles iPhone apps...so there's a lot information out there and wild edibles are closer than you think.

Addition to post 16/05/12:  goutweed - I forgot totally tell you how to do it. It's simple - just take the leaves off and wash them and cut in shape you want to and then fry them in pan with butter or oil for few minutes. And they are ready to serve as a side dish...

Sami Tallbergin Villiyrttikeittokirjan uudempi versio vuodelta 2011 tarjoaa monenmoista mahdollisuutta hyödyntää luonnonkasveja.

Voila, valmista tarjoiltavaksi.

Kierrätystehtaalla - At Recycling Factory

This weekend I went to event called Recycling FactoryIt was full of fun ideas and things. To me the most tempting brands were Paloni, Poola Kataryna and kimara Crafts. These are all Finnish brands. This weekend I also had some really nice time reading magazines I’ve ordered. Especially I enjoyed reading Huili magazine. They call it the very first Finnish ecological lifestyle magazine. There are interesting reports and stories, fashion and information and big plus for them - that they look good. They also took part in Recycling Factory. Huili is not too fancy but enough. Its paper feels soft and nice in hands and it’s simple outlook works well. I also read Swedish ecological magazine called Kloka Hem. It’s about ecological living and home decoration. It also has a number of interesting reports and it gives tips and facts about building a house or renovating a house for example. And the final thing of this weekend was that we took a short hiking route in Nuuksio. That was also fun and relaxing. Nature is just awaking here in Finland. Lovely.

So this was very ecological weekend! It gave me more reason to think my choices, what I choose to do when I’m consuming. I just wish I shouldn’t use a car so much but as I am a photographer I have so much stuff with me all the time and long distances – so I can’t live without. But step by step and of course have to remember - not trying to be perfect :)

He kutsuvat itseään Suomen ensimmäiseksi ekologiseksi lifestyle lehdeksi.
